“But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, …”

(answer from Ali Sina) “Arabs had four months in a year during which they never killed anyone, during which people could travel freely and go to pilgrimage.

In the verse you mentioned, Muhammad is referring to these four months.

Addressing the Pagans who had come to pilgrimage in the same years that Mecca was conquered, Muhammad says I will not kill you during these four holy months, but after that you must either convert or you’ll be dealt with my sword.

These four months grace applied only to that year. After the lapse of those four months everyone was expected to convert to Islam or face the Islamic army.

The prohibition of killing during the sacred months was a Pagan tradition. Muhammad broke that tradition six months after he migrated to Medina when he sent eight men to Nakhla with an instruction to raid a small merchant caravan during those sacred months. It is not unlawful for Muslims to kill at any time of the year.”

The fourth meaning of Ramadan is called “Sharpen” and “peak” of the sword or the spear, to prepare for battle. The Muslim must sharpen during the fasting month, the sword of reason and pointed the spear of his faith, to understand better the truth of Islam and are ready to fight well against all of its own internal and external enemies (unbelievers).

Easy Islam …because the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), in his sermon on the occasion of his last Hajj, declared: “One year consists of twelve months, of which four are sanctified months, three of them are in sequence; Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram (Ramadan), and the fourth is Rajab.”…

…because the month of Ramadan is admittedly the most sanctified month in the year. But these four months were specifically termed as sanctified months for the simple reason that their sanctity was accepted even by the pagans of Makkah….

…they observed the sanctity of these four months and despite their frequent tribal battles, they held it unlawful to fight in these months….
